Contest 4 - Winner's Interview - Claudia Biellmann Liebi

Please tell us about your journey as an artist.

My passion for art and creativity has grown as a strong part of my identity ever since I was little. Throughout my life, I have always been expressing my thoughts and feelings through drawing and painting.

From 1998 to 1999 I attended the Basel School of Design. Afterwards, I worked as a freelance artist for many years and had several exhibitions in Switzerland. But I reduced my painting for more than 20 years to pursue my non-art-related career. During this time, however, I was always creative, whether it was in design, dance or crafts.

Since 2023, I have had my own studio in Turgi, Switzerland, where I’m once again pursuing my true passion: painting. In 2024, I began to show my work to the public again.

Where art used to be my way of finding myself, today it is a true passion and my way to share little pieces of my soul with the world. When I paint, I feel free and just happy to paint. I love the creative process, in which I merge with the material until the work of art is born. My greatest source of inspiration is my interest in nature and different kinds of materials and texture. My curiosity to try out new things, go through the world with open eyes and to combine materials, shapes and colours again and again is my inexhaustible source of energy.

What is your medium and why did you choose it?

I paint with a wide range of different materials. I often use acrylic, oil and drawing ink. I really like to use bitumen or spray techniques. I combine all the different materials and techniques with each other, so that there is usually no artwork of mine that consists of just one material or technique. But I also paint with fire and wax on wood and have discovered a whole new form of expression for myself in doing so.

I love textures, so I like to use all kinds of fillers in my artworks. My works are also meant to be touched and felt. I paint both abstractly and figuratively, and in doing so I try to express the impressions I have captured.

What was the inspiration behind this work?

Autumn is also the season when the sky is often grey and the light subdued. Time seems to slow down. During this time, the colours that nature provides for us in such a beautiful way appear even more intense. This also applies to this rose hip, which stands out like a red flash against the rather barren background.

Who is your favourite artist? Why?

My absolute idol is Salvador Dalì. He inspired me a lot in my early artistic career and influenced my paintings. His surreal paintings captivated me and still inspire me today, although I have developed my own style in the meantime.
